Greensburg, Pennsylvania – August 3, 2012 – Zombie fever is sweeping the nation, and in Westmoreland County, its providing a unique fundraising opportunity.
Westmoreland Rotary is a young, energetic, and innovative club. And the Zombie Apocalypse is a one-of-a-kind, energetic, and innovative event.
“I don’t think fundraising has ever been done before in this way,” said Mr. Juan Trujillo, Westmoreland Rotary Club member who conceptualized the event and Kennametal analyst.
The game will be played at a Westmoreland County landmark, Hempfield Park on October 13, 2012. Anticipated is an audience of 150-200 players and spectators.
Zombie Apocalypse is a survival challenge game, similar to capture the flag and laser tag, where survivors will have to battle their way through an endless horde of zombies to reach shelter and safety. The game will comprise of four teams of survivors and an endless number of zombies.
For those who need a little help with their zombie transformations, local makeup artists will be on hand. Awards for best costume will be presented at a party at the Rialto restaurant in Greensburg following the game.
The charitable goal is to raise $2,000 for ShelterBox, a Rotary International project. ShelterBoxes are large green plastic containers that provide essential supplies a family would need in the immediate aftermath of a disaster. They include a tent, new thermal blankets, cooking utensils, a stove, basic tool kit and water purification equipment. “We chose to support this incredible organization for this particular fundraiser in an effort to educate our young participants on the mission of ShelterBox and the realities of disasters,” says Mr. Trujillo.“We hope to inspire the youth of Westmoreland County to be involved in community and international charitable outreach by engaging them in a dynamic and thought-provoking way.”
Promo videos for the event were entirely filmed, edited and produced on Mr. Trujillo’s iPhone 4s utilizing the iMovie app.
Filmed at a farm in Donegal, Pa, the movie trailer-like video shows viewers what to expect when they sign up for the outdoor game as either zombies or survivors.

Registration is $15 for zombies and $150 for a team of five survivors.
